Calypso and Soca Calypso is a music that's virtually synonymous with the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. Over the course of a century, the music developed, and, with the rise of soca. But over the last couple of years there's been something of a renaissance.Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music which originated in Trinidad at about the start of the 20th century. Calypso, Soca music-a fusion of both Calypso and Indian rhythms-has burgeoned over the past decades. Calpyso greats such as Mighty Sparrow, and Lord Kitchener, as well as Soca legends Lord Shorty and Super Blue to name a few, have each put their creative stamp on the genre along with the many others who have followed like Machel Montano.
